Having been in China for 3 full days we thought you’d like to hear our impressions.
The food is somewhat to be expected. Sort of.
Breakfast is quite different from the “western” style we are used to. It usually consists of vegetables, salads, at least 2-3 kinds of seafood, cakes, but also does include toast and oil-poached eggs.
Lunch has been close to the carving site and includes more of what breakfast offered minus the eggs and toast. We will get at least one bowl of rice to add to the chicken, shrimp, pork, duck and fish. Oh yeah … it also includes beer.
Supper is back at the hotel and usually reflects the lunch menu, only it has different ways of being presented.
The roads here are accidents waiting to happen … or at least we think they are. We haven’t seen one accident but have seen many close calls. The drivers use their horns here in a way that is completely different from home. It is used to let other drivers know that somebody else is there — coming through — wants to turn — coming fast . Pedestrians take their life into their own hands and do it often. They don’t use crosswalks and expect the cars to miss them.
There are alot of different ways of transporting people here. You will see cars, vans, buses, bicycles, bike-rickshaws and minitrucks.
The bathrooms in the hotel are great; the bathrooms at the carving site are not what we are used to. Toilet paper is rare.
Don’t get me wrong, Harbin definitely has many strong points. The streets are clean. The people are great and we have received many stares — maybe it’s the animal hats??
They have this city lit up. We’re not sure if it’s permanent or whether it’s for New Years or the Ice and Snow Festival. We’ll post some photos later to show you what we mean.
