2011 Winnipeg Day 5 – Sunday Morning Aches and Pains

We have been very busy at the block putting in some long days and were too tired to do any postings on day 3 or 4.

The week is over and we finished on Saturday at 3:00pm WITHOUT help from any of the other teams. This is a huge departure from the last 3 years here in Winnipeg. We accomplished our goal of finishing early, only not as early as we hoped. We wanted to return the favor this year and help some of the other teams.

A couple of things slowed us down and they could have been real bad. We had 9 cracks in our block and most of them were in sensitive areas. These vertical cracks appeared to go through the block and some were about 7 feet tall. While fixing one of them, Theressa was able to put a tool almost six inches into it. They criss-crossed the block and just seemed to go on forever. We were quite concerned that we might lose part of the sculpture at any time. With the cold temperatures we were able to fill the cracks and save the sculpture. One of the teams, Jacques’ team from Quebec, had their sculpture collapse late Saturday afternoon as they were trying to fix a crack.

The following photos are of the sculpture. You can see that the sculpture is lit by different colors. We have no choice in this and usually are quite happy that they are as well lit as they are. We were lucky in that we were located quite centrally and also along the most heavily used paths in the park.

Express Yourself – The night shot

One of the great sources of pride is when somebody walks by and you hear comments such as; “I like this one best” or “I think you’re going to win”. Of course, the only winners in a symposium like Winnipeg are the people of Winnipeg because they get to experience the talent and visions of artists from around the world. Actually, the sculptors are winners as well since we get to learn new techniques and see new tools in action.

One last comment, we’d like to take a moment to thank a couple of people for their help and support in Winnipeg. Gary Tessier and his team of volunteers make this a great event to attend. Secondly, thank you Air Canada for the flights to Winnipeg. It was appreciated.

By the way, we would love to get feed back from you. The comment form is quite easy to fill out and be assured, your personal information will not be handed out to anyone.
