2010 Winnipeg Day 1 – Finding Our Inner Sculpture

It was a happy cold day (-24C with a wind chill of -34c) for the beginning of the Voyageur Festival. The sky was a bright blue, there was a light breeze and the air was crisp.

It’s 12ft wide by 12ft deep by 10ft tall

Our block is situated a little ways away from most of the other blocks, but still close to Singapore and Argentina. We have plenty of room for any of snow that we might remove from our block. After looking the block over, we got to work pulling down the corners on one side. We had a goal of having a big chunk off the block before lunch. This made it easier for Theressa to come down off the block by way of ledges and steps as she dreaded using the ladder.

The second of two big cuts on day 1

After lunch, we had a goal of shaping the block more so that most of the heavy snow removal was done. We made that goal, but slightly missed Theressa’s goal of shaping out the figure on top. After removing more than a quarter of the blocks volume (about 5,000 pounds), Carol and I figured it had been a good and productive day (OK…just 7 hours of work). Our team captain agreed and said that we could have the night off.

Can you see the sculpture yet?
