We got off to a late start. Actually, we started on time, but only after we talked at great length about the orientation of the block. We wanted to take advantage of the sun, while at the same time taking into account the sun damaged south side. The sun has been creating havoc with the blocks, in fact ours lost a few inches over the last few days of the heat wave. We finally decided to have Henri (the little guy with the mask in his hands) on the north side. This will have the faces looking towards the areas that had the most pedestrian traffic.
As team captain, Theressa directs the action from the top of the block. Like a hot knife through butter, Carole and Terry cut away huge corners of snow using the wire rope saw.
There was very little ice, however the soft, wet snow was quite heavy. Once the snow is off the block the teams have to move it at least 5-6 feet away. This ensures that the bobcat has enough room to maneuver without hitting the blocks.
We are hoping the forecast is correct when they say it is getting colder. Carving snow in warm weather, although easy on the body, is tough on the mind.
We decided to call it a day when we broke for supper. It had started to cool down but the snow on 2 & 1/2 sides was still quite soft. With the weather changing to our benefit, we thought that taking it easy tonight and starting fresh in the morning would be our best option.
