2010 Quebec – Kim Speaks: Worth the Pain

Quebec City, Carnaval de Quebec, what better way to participate than by carving up a big block of snow. This was only my second carve and man what a different experience. Whitehorse last year was cold but the natural snow cut like butter, held a nice edge and polished up beautifully. Quebec used artificial snow, had rain before we arrived and then it froze hard. It was cold and physically challenging pounding into the saturated and then frozen snow, “SNICE” as Theressa coined for a description.

The experience however, was as they say “worth the pain”. I loved learning more about carving and experiencing some Quebec culture, language, music (okay not the disco), customs and the omnipotent Bonhomme. Walking around the festival site seeing people who embrace and enjoy the winter season. Exploring some of the old city and of course connecting with some carvers I had met before and meeting lots of new folks. Would I do it again? You bet! Where else can I spend 24hrs straight, standing in a snowbank chipping away at and moving a few tons of snow with some good friends…and still call it fun?

” Vive’ la snow”…….or something like that……uh…did I mention I was from out of town……. Kim Strange
